Arts and Crafts Group

Pillaton's Arts and Crafts Group was set up in the Autumn of 2013. Meetings are generally held fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons, 14:00-16:00, in the Village Hall.

Its first exhibition was held in April 2014 and proved very successful. Exhibitions have continued in alternate years (except 2020, during the Covid lockdown).

You can see photos from these exhibitions and others on the Gallery page.

To find out more, contact Maire Warwick.

Church Bell Ringing

Pillaton's church bell ringers practise on Tuesdays at 19:30 in St Odulph church. Practices are followed by a get-together in the Weary Friar at 21:00.

Children can learn to ring as soon as they are tall enough to reach the ropes (we have boxes for smaller ones to stand on!) and there is no upper age limit (ringers in their 90s are not uncommon). It exercises the body without putting too much stress on joints or muscles. Once you've mastered the physical skills, you can challenge your mind with 'method ringing' – a series of patterns of changes requiring memory and coordination.

If you want to know more, contact Maire Warwick.

Facebook Group

The Pillaton in Cornwall Facebook group, set up in March 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, is widely used.

Friends of St Odulph Church

The Friends of St Odulph is a charity run by a group of volunteers who want to secure the future of the village church as a community asset. Membership of the charity is free and open to anyone over the age of 18.
The aims of the group are to help conserve, maintain, and improve the fabric, furnishings and fittings of St Odulph; to widen the use of the church for the benefit of the community, to support the upkeep of the building and its grounds, and to foster public interest in them.

Its Secretary is Francesca Woodman.

Gardening Club

This group puts on a show at the Village Hall twice a year. Photographs from past shows are on the Gallery page.
Committee members are: Ian Edwards (Chairman); Chrissie and Lew Russell (Secretary); Tracy Kennedy (Treasurer); Carole Hoskin (Show Secretary).

Handbell Ringing

Pillaton and St Mellion Handbell Ringers practise on Wednesday afternoons.

In 2012 they retained the Cornish Music Festival Trophy, competing in Truro, and won the Saltash Music Festival Handbell Trophy.

Contact Maire Warwick.

Pilates

Pilates sessions are run by Liz Court on Thursday mornings, 10:00-11:00, at the Village Hall. For more details see Liz's website.

Skittles League

The village skittles league has teams of six who play once a month from October to March. The season champions receive a trophy. These are fun evenings and not taken too seriously (although things can get a bit competitive at times).
Reports, rankings and photographs from past seasons can be found on the Skittles League Archive page.

To find out more, contact Maggie Bruton.

Village News Magazine

The Village News magazine has been going for several decades now to keep the local community up to date with events. It's edited by Robin Dwane and published every other month.

Recent copies can be found on the Village Magazine page.

Winos

Pillaton Winos meet quarterly to taste wines in the Village Hall. If you’re interested in joining please email Matt Roser.

Pentillie Castle

Although not open every day, Pentillie Castle has open days and runs special events throughout the year. For more details, see the Pentillie website.

U3A

A number of villagers are active members of the Callington U3A, an organisation for people no longer in full time employment which meets 10:00-12:00 in Callington Town Hall on the first Monday of the month (or the following Monday if that is a Bank Holiday).
There's usually a speaker, and it's an opportunity to meet other members and find out about the special interest groups, eg art, creative writing, needlework, walking, music appreciation and philosophy.

To find out more, visit the Callington U3A web site. Its main website lists other U3A groups.

Walks around Pillaton

A booklet produced by the late Andrew Harris contains walks that start and finish in the village. Maps and directions are given for half a dozen walks with distances varying from 2½ to 8 miles. See Walks Around Pillaton for versions to view on-line or to print.

Further ideas for walks in the wider area, particularly if you are a dog walker, can be found on the Kernock Cottages site.
